Peachtree City Attorney - IRS Offers in Compromise

No one likes dealing with the IRS or the Georgia tax department, and many people are intimidated by the notices they receive in the mail informing them that they have a delinquent tax debt. What you may not realize is that you have options and this federal agency wants to resolve this matter as much as you do.

The IRS and the Georgia tax department routinely allow tax settlements through the use of offers in compromise. However, having a knowledgeable lawyer on your side who knows how to negotiate this kind of resolution can make all of the difference. At the Tierney Law Firm, I have been helping people from all walks of life use this option since I started to practice in 1990.

Peachtree City Lawyer - IRS Offers in Compromise

Contact my law office today online or by telephone at 678-723-4261 to learn how I can help with any delinquent tax matter you need resolved. I serve clients in the South Metro Atlanta area from my law office in Peachtree City.

Resolving a tax debt through an offer in compromise is available to anybody, whether you are an individual, a small business or a corporation. Both the state and federal governments have a vested interest in resolving these matters. They want money to help the government run and you want to pay to get rid of this liability hanging over your head.

I can help you negotiate an offer in compromise that the IRS has the authority and duty to accept. This will be a current lump sum payment that is based on your available and current assets in your possession as a debtor. The IRS also has the ability to adjust the payment based on your current income, something they are willing to do as long as you will attempt to pay the debt in good faith. Georgia also has a new program to try and resolve these old tax liabilities within 30 days.

Additionally, like many other things, there is a statute of limitations when it comes to how long the IRS or the state can try to collect on the debt. Both agencies have 10 years to collect, and after that they can no longer look at your income or expenses to come up with a number. In certain circumstances, if you have been sick or have a sick child some tax debts may be forgiven and wiped off your record.

Finally, sometimes bankruptcy is an option when it comes to dealing with outstanding tax debts. If the tax liability is more than 3 years old, you can discharge it in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. I can help you use bankruptcy for very old taxes to be discharged, while helping you negotiate an offer in compromise for newer tax debt.
